Biography:

Dr. Oliver “Russell” Bartlett was born in Camlachie, Lambton County, Ontario on the 11th of May, 1902.  Dr. Bartlett was the 2nd of 5 children born to the Rev. Leonard Bartlett and the former Sarah Jane Phillips.  His father was a Methodist Minister.  Dr. Bartlett’s siblings were; Leonard “Sheldon” Bartlett, Wallace Howard Bartlett, Vera Irene Bartlett and Mary Ida Bartlett.

Dr. Bartlett trained as an accountant and he was in that occupation when he married Frieda Maud McClary in Thamesville on the 2nd of June, 1926.  Mrs. Bartlett was born on the 4th of October, 1904 in Middlesex County.  She was the eldest of 2 children born to Frederick Decker McClary and the former Maud Augusta Pearson.  Her parents were farmers and her sister was Annie Matilda McClary.  Dr. and Mrs. Bartlett were married by Dr. Bartlett’s father.  After their marriage, they settled in Highland Park, Michigan and Dr. Bartlett worked as a clerk for the Chrysler Motor Company.  A son Donald was born to them while they lived in Michigan.

Dr. Bartlett returned to school and graduated M.D. from the University of Western Ontario in 1941.  While he was at university, Dr. Bartlett was one of the oldest students in his medical class and he acquired the nickname “Pop”, a nickname that stuck with him for the rest of his life.   Dr. Bartlett interned at Victoria Hospital in London and set up his first medical practice in Bothwell.  In 1944 Dr. Bartlett attended McGill University in Montreal and completed a course in anesthesia.  In 1945, Dr. Bartlett set up his anaesthesiology practice in Hamilton, the same city that his brother Dr. Leonard Sheldon Bartlett was practicing in.  Dr. Russell Bartlett worked at Hamilton General Hospital and St Joseph’s Hospital.

Dr. Bartlett and his wife Frieda divorced and he married Gladys Marie (Card) Boam.  Gladys Card was born in Chatham Twp on the 10th of May, 1913, the 3rd of 5 children.  Her parents, Alvin Card and the former Ida Amelia Clark were farmers and her siblings were; Bessie, Sherman, Mark and Beulah.   Mrs. Gladys Bartlett was married to Daniel Kingston Boam on the 8th of October, 1932 in Bothwell. Mr. Boam was a miller and they had 2 children,  a son and a daughter.  They also divorced and Mrs. Frieda (McClary) Bartlett married Daniel Kingston Boam.

Dr. Bartlett moved to Windsor, Ontario in 1946, where he practiced anaesthesia.  In 1968, Dr. and Mrs. Bartlett resided at 1805 Riverside Drive West in Windsor.

Dr. Bartlett died at Metropolitan Hospital in Windsor on the 8th of June, 1968. He was buried at Victoria Memorial Cemetery in Windsor.  Mrs. Gladys Bartlett died in Chatham at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance on the 3rd of March, 1999.   She was buried next to Dr. Bartlett.

Frieda (McClary) (Bartlett) Boam died on the 26th of April, 1994.  She was buried at West Bothwell Cemetery in Zone Twp, Chatham-Kent, next to Daniel K. Boam (d. 1980).
