Biography:

Dr. Jeffrey Talbot Sutherland was born in Southwold Township (Elgin County), Ontario on the 30th of June, 1858.  Dr. Sutherland was the eldest of 7 children born to Peter Sutherland and the former Ann Hunter.   His parents were farmers and his siblings were; William Sutherland, Isabella Sutherland (who was born and died in 1861), Annie Sutherland, Hedley Vicars Sutherland, Peter Norman Sutherland and George H. Duff Sutherland.

Dr. Sutherland graduated from Trinity College in 1882 and he started his medical practice in Leamington, Ontario.  Dr. Sutherland’s name appears on birth and death records in Wheatley and Romney Township, indicating he routinely attended to patients in Chatham-Kent.

Dr. Sutherland married Sarah “Elizabeth” Brooks in Fingal (Elgin County), Ontario on the 20th of November, 1883.  Mrs. Sutherland was born in Southwold Township (Elgin County), Ontario on the 15th of September, 1854.  She was the 4th of 8 children born to John William Brooks and the former Sarah Louther.  Her father was a blacksmith and her siblings were; Mary Ann Brooks, Jane Louther Brooks, Charles Hiram Brooks, Cecilia Eliza Brooks, Emma Brooks, John William Brooks and James Benton Brooks.

Dr. and Mrs. Sutherland had a son Algernon Gracey Sutherland born to them on the 6th of April, 1884 in Leamington.  Sadly he died on the 4th of January, 1888 of diptheria.

Dr. Sutherland died in Leamington on the 9th of July, 1902.  At the time of his death he resided on John Street.  Dr. Sutherland was buried at Lakeview Cemetery, 233 Erie St. S., in Leamington.

Mrs. Sutherland remarried after the death of her husband.  She married William Smith on the 13th of July, 1920.  Mr. Smith was a merchant in Leamington.  Mrs. Sutherland-Smith died on the 30th of December, 1926.  Mrs. Sutherland was buried next to Dr. Sutherland at Lakeview Cemetery.

*Dr. Sutherland’s brother Dr. Peter Norman Sutherland died in Angola, Indiana on the 28th of December, 1935.
