Biography:

Dr. Henry George Swan was born in Toronto, Ontario on the 4th of February, 1911.  Dr. Swan was the eldest of 4 children born to James Henry Swan and the former Mary Caroline Cuthbertson. At the time of his birth, the Swan family resided at 94 Farnham Avenue in Toronto.  His father was a grocer and his siblings were; Mary Alison Swan, James Robert Swan and Thomas Frederick Swan.

Dr. Swan graduated from Upper Canada College in 1928 and in 1931 Dr. Swan resided with his family at 64 Woodlawn Avenue in Toronto, while attending the University of Toronto.  Dr. Swan graduated from The University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine in 1935.  He pursued post graduate studies at Johns Hopkins University and The University of Toronto.

Dr. Swan served with the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII.  He was a Surgeon Lieutenant Commander from 1940 until 1945.

After his discharge from the Canadian Armed Forces, Dr. Swan was known to be practicing medicine in Tilbury, Ontario in 1945.  On birth and death records he listed Box 116, Tilbury as his address.

Dr. Swan was married to Agnes Isobel Martin who was born in Toronto on the 26th of December, 1915.  She was the 3rd of 5 children born to Robert John Martin and the former Isabella Jane Ballantine.  Her father’s occupation was listed as a labourer on her birth record and she was born at 4 Fermanagh Avenue.  Her siblings were; a baby brother who was born on the 25th of March, 1912 and died 3 days later, Robert John Martin, Harold P. Martin and George Edward Martin.

According to the 1931 census, Mrs. Swan and her family resided in Melancthon Township in Dufferin County, Ontario and her father ran a general merchandise store.  Mrs. Swan was a registered nurse.

Dr. and Mrs. Swan had identical twin sons, James and George in September of 1946.  In 1950 Dr. and Mrs. Swan settled in Barrie, Ontario, where Dr. Swan practiced medicine.

Dr. Swan retired after practicing medicine for 50 years.

Mrs. Swan died in Barrie, Ontario on the 29th of October, 1987.  Dr. Swan died in Shanty Bay, Ontario on the 7th of November, 1999.  Dr. and Mrs. Swan were buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto.

*Dr. and Mrs. Swan’s son, Dr. James Henry Swan graduated M.D. from Queen’s University in 1971.
