Biography:

Dr. John E. McTaggart was born near Palmyra, Ontario on the 19th of May, 1839.  Dr. McTaggart was the eldest of 5 children born to Daniel McTaggart and the former Mary Stewart.  Both of his parents were born in Scotland.  His parents were farmers and his siblings were; David McTaggart, Sarah Jane McTaggart, Isadora Vanina McTaggart and Mary “Minnie” E. McTaggart.

Dr. McTaggart began studying medicine in a doctor’s office in Ridgetown.

Dr. McTaggart married Margaret McBride in London, Ontario on the 6th of October 1870.  Mrs. McTaggart was born on the 20th of February, 1848.  She was the 3rd of 7 children born to John McBride and the former Euphemia “Phoebe” Love.   Her parents were farmers in Elgin County and her siblings were; Elizabeth “Betsey” McBride, Alex McBride, James McBride, Euphemia McBride, Mary McBride and Catherine McBride.

At the time of his marriage Dr McTaggart was a medical student at the University of New York in Buffalo and the couple resided in Buffalo, New York.  Upon graduation in 1871, Dr. McTaggart started practicing medicine in Marine City, Michigan before moving to Palmyra, Ontario.

In 1881, Dr. McTaggart owned 100 acres on Concession 3 (Lot 3) in Orford Twp and he was practicing medicine in Palmyra.  There are Detroit Business Directories as early as 1881, that record Dr. McTaggart practicing medicine in Detroit.  According to the 1901 U.S. Census, Dr. and Mrs. McTaggart lived at 141 Abbott Street.

By 1910, Dr. and Mrs. McTaggart were living at 258 Helen Ave., in Detroit, Michigan.   Mrs. McTaggart died at her residence on the 20th of November, 1911 in Detroit.

Dr. McTaggart died at his residence in Detroit on the 10th of May, 1915.  Dr. and Mrs. McTaggart were buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Ridgetown.  Dr. and Mrs. McTaggart had no children.

*Dr. McTaggarts’s mother, Mrs. Mary (Stewart) McTaggart died on the 14th of September, 1915 at the age of 96.  She was buried at Greenwood Cemetery.  Mrs. McTaggart outlived 4 of her 5 children.
