Biography:

Dr. Anson Andrew Smith was born in Howard Twp (Chatham-Kent) on the 27th of April, 1863.   Dr. Smith was the 3rd of 5 children born to Dr. Jacob Smith and the former Elizabeth “Ann” Smith (her maiden name was Smith).  His father was a respected family physician in Ridgetown and his siblings were; Mary Elizabeth Smith, Emma Smith, Israel Golden Smith and Herbert David Smith.  His father had a brother named Anson Smith who died in 1850 at the age of 21.

Dr. Smith was educated in Ridgetown before attending The University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine.  Dr. Anson Andrew Smith graduated M.D. in 1889 but sadly, his parents  would not see him graduate as his father died in 1885 and his mother died in 1886.  Dr. Anson Smith set up his medical practice in Ridgetown.   According to the 1891 census, his sister Mary and his brothers Herbert and Israel were living with him in Ridgetown.

By 1899, Dr. Anson Smith had moved to Muskegon, Michigan.  His office and his residence were located at 119 W. Western Ave., Muskegon, Michigan.  Dr. Smith belonged to the Masonic Lodge in Michigan.

Dr. Smith died on March 31st, 1933 at Hackley Memorial Hospital in Muskegon.   At the time of his death he resided at 373 W. Western Avenue in Muskegon.  Dr. Smith was buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Ridgetown.  He never married or had any children.

**Dr. Smith’s brother Israel Goldwin Smith, graduated in 1896 from The University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine and practiced medicine in the Ottawa area.  

***Dr. Smith’s brother Herbert David Smith was a distinguished lawyer and became the Crown Attorney in Chatham.
