Dr. Charles Franklin West was born in Charing Cross on the 5th of July, 1854.  Dr. West was the eldest of 3 children born John Harvey West and the former Jane McDougall.  His father was a cabinet maker and his siblings were; Harvey “Harry” William West who was born in Chatham on the 19th of August, 1857 and his sister Jennie West who was born in Chatham on the 24th of July, 1866.  On the 1861 census, his mother’s occupation was listed as a seamstress.

Dr. West graduated in medicine from the University of Michigan in 1876.  After graduating he started practicing medicine in Chatham. Dr. West advertised his medical practice in the Chatham Business Directory of 1876-1877.  His medical practice was located on Harvey Street near Wellington Street.  According to the 1881 census, Dr. West was living with his parents in the Town of Chatham.

He remained a bachelor until he was 48 years old.  He married Mary Almira (Younglove) Sadler on the 28th of October, 1902, in Essex, Ontario.  She was  born in February of 1867 in Monroe, Michigan, the 3rd of 4 children born to Edward Younglove and the former Almira Adams.  Her siblings were; George Franklin Younglove, Helen E. Younglove and Edward Albert Younglove.  Mrs. West was married to Frank Sadler on the 25th of August, 1887 in Michigan.  She and Mr. Sadler had 3 sons, Frank (born in 1889 – died 14 May, 1893), Milard who was born in 1893 and died in the same year and Russell who was born in December of 1894.  Mrs. West divorced Mr. Sadler in April of 1902.

Dr. and Mrs. West had a son, Charles Franklin West Jr. who was born in Detroit on the 23rd of September, 1903.  The baby died 23 days later on the 16th of October, 1903.  He was buried at Woodmere Cemetery in Detroit.

According to the 1906 Detroit City Business Directory Dr. West’s medical practice and his residence was located at 469 Lincoln Avenue.

Dr. West died on the 11th of May, 1907 in Detroit.  At the time of his death, Dr. and Mrs. West resided at 469 Lincoln Avenue in Detroit.  He was buried in Chatham.

Mrs. West married Ethelbert Scanlon on the 16th of June, 1910 in Raymond Washington.  Mr. Scanlon was the son of John Scanlon and the former Mary Thayer.  According to the 1930 census, Mr. Scanlon was a labourer at a lumber mill.  Mrs. Mary Almira (West) Scanlon died in Raymond, Washington on the 5th of January, 1935.  Mrs. (West) Scanlon was buried at Fern Hill Cemetery, Aberdeen, Washington.  Mr. Scanlon died in Raymond, Washington on the 29th of October, 1952.

*Dr. West’s brother Harry West served with the Canadian Armed Services during WWI.  

**Ethelbert Scanlan registered in WWI with the United States Army on the 12th of September, 1918.  There was a note on his registration card that he was missing all the fingers on his right hand.
