Dr. Joseph Pierre Parent was born in Sandwich Twp, Essex County on the 31st of January, 1893. He was the 6th of 7 children born to his parents Patrice Parent and the former Euphrosine Janisse, who were farmers. His siblings were; Emil, Alfred, Ferdinand, Eugene, Lucian and Marie.
Dr. Parent attended Laval University in Quebec and he graduated M.D. in 1919. He married Louise Gertrude Lemay on the 15th of September 1920 at St Jean’s Church in Amherstburg (Essex County). Mrs. Parent was born on the 2nd of June, 1900 in Amherstburg. She was the youngest of 5 children born to Joseph Lemay and the former Christine Paquette. Her siblings were; Clifford, Lillian, Clara and Hilda. Her father was a carpenter.
Dr. Parent set up his medical practice in Chatham. According to the 1921 census, he was boarding at the Bechard residence at 40 McKeough Ave in Chatham. The Vernon’s City Directory for Chatham records the location for his office as 216 King Street West. His phone number was 1031 and his residence was at the Sanita Hotel. Dr. Parent’s name appears on numerous birth and death records in Chatham, Chatham Township and Dover Township.
In 1923, Dr. Parent was elected as the Vice-President of the French Canadian Educational Association of Ontario. Dr. Parent was known to be practicing in Chatham as late as 1925.
Dr. Parent died on the 25th of October, 1978 in Windsor. Mrs. Parent died in 1986. They are buried at Our Lady of the Lake Cemetery in Essex County.
