Biography:

Dr. Joseph Pierre Parent was born in Sandwich Twp (Essex County), Ontario on the 31st of January, 1893.  Dr. Parent was the 6th of 7 children born to Patrice Jeremie Parent and the former Marie Euphrosine Janisse.  His parents were farmers and his siblings were; Emile Francoise Parent, Alfred Louis Joseph Parent, Charles Ferdinand Parent, Joseph Eugene Jeremie Parent, Lucian Raimond Parent and Marie Ann Clothilde Parent.

Dr. Parent  graduated from the University of Detroit in 1914 and continued his education at Laval University in Quebec, graduating M.D. in 1919.

Dr. Parent married Louise Gertrude Lemay on the 15th of September 1920 at St Jean’s Church in Amherstburg (Essex County), Ontario.  Mrs. Parent was born in Amherstburg on the 2nd of June, 1900.  She was the youngest of 6 children born to Joseph Adolphe Lemay and the former Christine Paquette. Her father was a carpenter and her siblings were; Clifford Joseph LeMay, Lillian Mary LeMay, Clara LeMay, Lena Elda “Hilda” LeMay and Annie Eveline LeMay (who died of whooping cough at the age of 4 weeks).

Dr. Parent set up his medical practice in Chatham, Ontario in 1920.  According to the 1921 census, he was boarding at the Bechard residence at 40 McKeough Ave in Chatham.  In the 1923 edition of the Vernon’s City of Chatham Business Directory, Dr. Parent’s medical office was located at 216 King Street West and his phone number was 1031.  His residence was listed as the Sanita Hotel in Chatham.  In the 1925 and 1926 Vernon’s City Directory for Chatham both his medical office and his residence were listed as 216 King Street West.  Dr. Parent’s name appears on numerous birth and death records in the City of Chatham and in Chatham and Dover Townships.

Dr. and Mrs. Parent had 2 children, Suzanne and Charles.

In 1923, Dr. Parent was elected as the Vice-President of the French Canadian Educational Association of Ontario.

Dr. and Mrs. Parent moved to Windsor in 1926.  He served as the Medical Officer of Health for Sandwich East Township and Dr. Parent was designated as a Coroner.

Dr. Parent died at Hotel Dieu Hospital in Windsor on the 25th of October, 1978.  Mrs. Parent died in Windsor on the 11th of October, 1986.  Dr. and Mrs. Parent were buried at Our Lady of the Lake Cemetery in Essex County.

*Mrs. Parent’s brother Rev. Fr. Clifford Joseph LeMay served with the United States Armed Forces during WWI and WWII.
