Dr. Abram David Froese was born on the 5th of September, 1899 in the Ukraine, the son David Cornelius Froese and the former Elizabeth Buhler. Dr. Froese had a sister Agnes. In 1924, Dr. Froese immigrated to Canada.
Dr. Froese graduated M.D. from The University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine in 1932. He interned for 2 years at the Toronto Western Hospital. In 1934, Dr. Froese set up his general medical practice in Leamington, Ontario.
Dr. Froese was known to travel the short distance from Leamington to Wheatley and Romney Twp in Chatham-Kent to care for his patients. Over a number of years he did post-graduate studies in Bonn and Heidelburg, Germany and at the University of Michigan and at Cook County Hospital in Chicago.
Dr. Froese married Dr. Katarina Bergen on the 15th of June, 1953. Dr. Bergen-Froese was also born in the Ukraine in 1918, the daughter of Heinrich Bergen and the former Maria Warkentin. She had 6 siblings, 4 sisters and 6 brothers, including; Margaret, Mary and Heinrich.
Dr. and Dr. Froese were the parents of a daughter, Carol Ann Froese. They resided at 66 John Street in Leamington.
Dr. Abram Froese served as the Chief of Medicine at the Leamington District Memorial Hospital for 5 years. He took a special interest in the care of his patients at the Leamington Mennonite Home for the Aged.
Dr. Froese and his wife had retired from the practice of medicine in April of 1974. They had moved to a farm located on Highway #3 east of Leamington. Dr. Froese died on the 19th of August, 1974.
After the death of her husband, Dr. Katarina Froese married Ewald Wiebe. After the death of Mr. Wiebe, she married Karl Koch. Mrs. Froese-Koch died on the 7th of January, 1998. Dr. and Dr. Froese were buried at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, 366 Talbot Street West, Leamington.
Mr. Karl Koch died in July of 2007.
*Dr. and Dr. Froese’s daughter graduated M.D. from the University of Western Ontario in 1979. Her medical specialty is psychiatry and she practises in Honolulu, Hawaii.
